Fame hungry Roxie Hart dreams of a life on the Vaudville stage, and spends her nights jazzing it up in the bright lights of Chicago, continually hoping that she’ll find her lucky break, and be shot into 1920’s stardom, so able to flee her boring husband Amos. In awe of seductive club singer Velma Kelly (who is subsequantly arrested for the murder of her husband and sister - after discovering their affair), Roxie meets Fred Cassely a man who convinces her he can ‘make her showbiz career take off’. However after Roxie has undergone the ‘casting couch’ treatment, and Fred has had his wicked way with her, he reveals that he has no more connections in showbusiness than she does. This is the final straw for Roxie, and her constant anger at rejection explodes. She shoots Fred Cassely and kills him. Upon discovering her infidelity, Roxie’s husband Amos refuses to take the blame for the murder and Roxie is sent to jail, pending hanging. In jail she finally meets tabloid darling Velma Kelly, currently receiving huge media attention for the double murder she committed earlier in the tale. Sharing the clink with Velma, are a collection of other sly females, all awaiting trial for the murders of their own partners. Velma is aloof to Roxie, however the prison Warden Mrs Morton offers Roxie the opportunity of representation by slick Chicago lawyer Billy Flynn. Billy is more a showbiz P. R agent than a legal lawyer and minipulates the tabloids into thinking Roxie is no more than an innocent ‘good time girl’ who took the wrong path, than a scheming murderess. The tabloids go crazy for the new girl on the cell block, and Roxie finally becomes a star. However due to Roxie’s new found fame, Velma is forgotten about. She is forced to approach Roxie with an offer of a part in her Vaudville act (filling the gap left by her murdered sister), but Roxie turns down her offer flat, thinking she needs no support in topping the bill. However, just as Velma’s star fell, so does Roxie’s, when Go-to-hell Kitty arrives at the jail on a multiple murder charge, the press forget Roxie and now she and Velma are in the same boat. With one more trick up her sleave Roxie manages to bring the media attention back onto her, and her day in court arrives. Billy is now ready to play the ultimate showman!

Two people Matt and Kate wake up in a closed down prison. They have no idea how they got there, or why they are there. In the prison they encounter several terrors as they look for an exit. These terrors include a wolf beast that terrorizes Kate, a hideous monster that hunts them both, a “zombie” surgeon who operates on people whilst you’re still alive, the executioner who gives Kate a ride in his electric chair and finally executes her with the guillotine. But Kate just wakes up again in the prison and the nightmare continues. Also in the prison Matt and Kate encounter a strange number that pops up a regular basis, first the number is being printed over and over again on a printer gone crazy, next the number appears painted on a wall in blood. Kate finds a room containing a vacuum tube machine for sending messages between rooms, when she pushes the operation button it comes alive and a cylinder appears. Inside the cylinder are the pictures of five people, Kate has no idea who these five people are. Later in the movie Matt and Kate explore the basement in the search for an exit and discover five pairs of shoes all neatly arranged on a shelf. As Matt and Kate endure these horrors, the beautiful fashion model Raquel Lake is being interrogated by the police about a series of homicides. Raquel is arrogant and diabolical, she also has a very high IQ and proves more than a match for the professional police interrogator. Strangely many of the subjects in the police interview correlate with the events transpiring in the prison. For instance, Raquel is shown a series of pictures of five dead people, and when Raquel is informed by the detective that they are “looking for a cold blooded predator.” Raquel’s response is….”like the wolf?” What is the connection between the two people trapped in the prison and the interrogation of Raquel Lake?

Sixteen months later, Burke joins a task force put together by the governor to investigate a series of unexplained deaths in the Harrison Penitentiary. While Burke poses as an inmate, attorney Amanda Beckett acts the role of his wife. In the penitentiary, Burke is forced to survive in an environment so dismal and filthy that it makes a public restroom in New York City look like a room in a five star hotel. Burke does succeed in befriending a few of the inmates, including Hawkins and Priest, who help him with the investigation. More inmates are mysteriously murdered. Burke’s cell-mate is killed, and prison guard DeGraff puts Burke in solitary confinement, where he’s interrogated and beaten. As if that’s not enough, the Sandman ends up at Harrison. As it turns out, the prisoners are being murdered for their body organs. Back on the outside, Beckett attends a party given by Vogler, the state’s attorney general. Just as she’s preparing to tell him about the murders at the prison, Beckett receives a call from her assistant, who identifies Vogler’s henchman Keane as the man behind the murders, which also involve Dr. Gottesman, the surgeon who harvests the organs to be sold to people who are in desperate need of them. The assistant’s suspicions are confirmed when Vogler tries to kill Beckett. Burke begins an escape from the penitentiary, pursued by the Sandman and hundreds of angry inmates who have been set free and armed with the knowledge that Burke is a cop.
